Through Aorta, Vein …

When first we hear

we hear it speak,

we hear it cry as it dies,

going back into earth.

It’s light going out that cries,

light whose word is life in

artery capillary, vein – whose

word is life near the heart.

Near is light near.

Near is dam to ha’adam.*

And near the cry

within the cry:

Brother’s keeper am I?

Through aorta, vein,

through cerebral artery,

life that’s light, passing,

life that speaks so near:

it’s others’ blood we bear.

(*Near is blood to the man.)
